Spiritual message for today: it was Not random

I’ll explain why this happens.

It wasn’t random.

You are meant to read each road sign. Otherwise you’ll be lost on your way some place new.

Right?

And when something lingers in the air - like a fresh bag of strawberries en route to Chinatown - it’s because it refuses your dismissal. It is begging for your sweet attention.

The first bite.
The juice blast.
The flavor - focus on how it floats over your palate evoking curiosity.

We often will ignore this and say…

“it’s no big deal”
“I’m overthinking this”
“it didn’t mean anything to me”

And yet… here we are, still thinking about that fresh bag of those strawberries from Chinatown.

If it meant nothing, why is it still on our mind?

So — what are we going to do with this metaphorical bag of strawberries?

You weren’t ready to understand it… yet.

Coffee fortune reading is similiar. We ignore the important signs that we don’t feel are necessary in the present moment. I can’t tell you how often a guest will e-mail me months after a reading, thanking me for the “eureeka” moment that they had long after our fortune ceremony in New York City.

And clarity often arrives late - that’s why we say hindsight 20-20. Well guess what? Let me be your 20-20 vision. Take the F train right now and visit me in East Village!

Sometimes we don’t want to admit the truth in the moment. Or we don’t want to face it.

A good fortune teller makes the truth easier to swallow. Like those sweet strawberries.

That’s my job.

Remember, sometimes fortune reading begs patience. The future may still feel unresolved and slightly annoying at the moment. This is completely normal. It’s not that you’re confused or uncertain, it’s just that you need time to swallow and digest the truth. Trust me.

I’ve been doing this for nearly a decade now. Read our New York Times article if you don’t believe me!

Questions to memories tend to repeat themselves… just like these Turkish cups holding your next coffee fortune.

So, tell me… what are you starting to see?

First a story.

The other day while riding the bus, my wife Amy and I met a veteran named Renee Impromptu.

Or at least that’s what I think he said.

I noticed his Vietnam hat and dished out the obligatory “thanks for your service" one-liner.

The next thing I know, a verbal whiplashing was launched onto my tender soul. Slowly though, upon realizing that I am just a well-meaning psychic, he softened his blow. Eventually, hugging it out on the M19 bus going to Chinatown (perhaps now you know the origins of the strawberries).

The bottom line is this.

I listened. I didn’t need to understand everything about his philosophy on why he doesn’t like that line (he prefered “welcome back home” by the way). But I respected his words. And sometimes the universe is a bit like Renee. We don’t always understand what it is trying to convey. But as long as we don’t resist its lesson - we can always grow and learn.

It’s like this. You’ll be having a little chit-chat with one of your colleagues about how amazing Dr. Honeybrew’s Turkish coffee ceremony was, when you suddenly have a flashback moment. Then your friend chimes about it. And you start thinking again. And before you know it

What once felt confusing suddenly makes sense.

“That Turk knew it all along.”

And that is where everything begins to change whether you’re ready or not.

If you want to understand what you’re seeing…

This is exactly what I hunt for in a fortune reading.

The patterns that keep knocking, the details everyone politely ignores, and the moments that made no sense… until they stood up and introduced themselves.

Or when I hugged the veteran.

Because in my world, nothing shows up twice without a reason.

I look forward to running into Renee soon.

If something has been following you around lately, let’s look at it.

Send your coffee and I’ll read what it’s been trying to show you!
